Content
Topics you will cover in the BAK and PPL courses include aircraft familiarisation, aviation terminology, communications, aircraft general knowledge and control, rules and procedures of flight, theory of flight, meteorology and navigation.  
 
Recommended Parallel Subjects:It is recommended that, in addition to Aviation Studies, you select English, Maths B, Physics and 2 other subjects possibly including Maths C. You need to know that a pass in Senior Maths B is a requirement for employment by the major airlines.
 
Assessment: Theory Tests are provided by the RQAC and may be completed at school or at Archerfield Aerodrome.
 
Career Pathways:  Having completed two years of Aviation Studies in Years 11 and 12, you will be able to apply to articulate into the Diploma of Applied Science (Aviation) with the Academy for International Aviation Careers (AIAC) which is a coalition between the Royal Queensland Aero Club (RQAC), Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The Diploma of Applied Science (Aviation) will lead to a Commercial Pilot Licence and the theory component of an Air Transport Pilot Licence.  Upon completion of the diploma from the AIAC, you may elect to enrol in the Bachelor of Applied Science at QUT. Successful completion of the Diploma studies entitles you to 96 credit points, which will reduce the length of the Degree course from 36 months to between 24 and 30 months.
 Costs: As an aviation student, you will be required to complete a Direct Debit Authority with RQAC prior to commencement of flying training. The nominated bank account or credit card will then be automatically debited on the 7th of each month for the amount outstanding. It is expected that the attainment of the Private Pilot’s Licence will cost between $15000 and $20000.
 
Requirements You must:
  •  be a minimum of 16 years of age to undertake your first solo flight
  •  ensure that you have passed the aviation medical before committing yourself to this course of study.
  •  A list of aviation medical examiners is available online at www.casa.gov.au
  •   wear the RQAC pilot’s uniform when engaged in activities at the aerodrome.
