Visual Art

Students will be actively involved in both making and appraising artworks, by researching and reacting to a variety of stimuli, developing solutions to art problems and resolving ideas in visual, written or spoken forms. Students are encouraged to experience Visual Art personally through a variety of contexts eg. social, cultural, environmental, and to use a variety of styles eg. representational, abstract, symbolic. A discovery approach to learning is utilised, which encourages self-discipline, independence and collaboration with peers to develop a personal aesthetic. A range of computer technologies is utilised to underpin concepts studied over the two-year course.

Year 11 is a foundation year, allowing for specialisation in more student-initiated activities for Year 12 where they exit having covered two areas of study.

Creative Arts - Visual Arts Studies

Content - This course should be seen as an alternative vehicle to the QSA Visual Art course and has a broadly vocational focus.  It is offered to those students who have had success in Years 8-10 in handling creative ideas in visual and tactile work but who will find the theoretical component of the QSA senior Visual Art course difficult.
Visual Art practitioners fulfil many roles in a community such as makers, presenters, technicians and managers.  Visual Art Studies provides opportunities for students to explore these roles through active engagement with Art. It helps students to understand the different careers available in the industry.  By taking on some practitioners’ roles, student are exposed to authentic arts industry practices in which they learn to view the world from different perspectives and experiment with different ways of sharing ideas.

Student will be working aesthetically and will be learning about aesthetic codes and symbol systems. They will use their senses as means of understanding and responding to their own and others’ arts work.  In this way students’ imaginative, emotional, aesthetic, analytical and reflective experiences are heightened, fostering creativity and developing problem-solving skills.

Students also learn about workplace health and safety issues, effective work practices and arts administration.  Preparation for the workplace is further enhanced through fostering a positive work ethic, teamwork and project management skills.

Assessment - There are three (3) exit criteria which contribute to the student’s exit level of achievement.  They are Exploring, Knowing and Expressing.  Assessment will focus on these areas with only short oral and written presentations required.

Career Pathways : If you’re interested in visual or tactile design in the commercial or creative industries field, Visual Art Studies will allow you to put together a folio of work for presentation to employers.

Recommended Pre-requisite: To participate in Visual Art Studies, students should have demonstrated an interest in Art or Design in Years 8-10.  A commitment to working collaboratively with others on joint projects and meeting deadlines is essential.

Costs: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme plus individual student levy to cover additional costs for individual artwork requirements.
