Early Childhood Practices

During the two-year course of study you will study a number of units covering topics that include:
  • Early Childhood Education and Services
  • Development from Conception to 6 Years – physical, social-emotional and intellectual
  • Creativity, Self Expression and the Young Child
  • Play and Learning
  • Australian Families and Child-rearing Practices
  • Working with children: careers pathways
You will need to be prepared to be an active participator in the Indooroopilly Playgroup and also to attend excursions to childcare organisations, conferences and events.
 
Assessment: You will be assessed through a variety of tasks that include compilation of observational reports, written and practical assignments, class tests and participation in the Indooroopilly Playgroup. Your overall result will reflect your ability to:
§     recall facts
§     apply knowledge to theoretical and practical situations
§     design and implement activities and programmes for young children
§     evaluate and reflect on personal performance
§     compile observations of children in playgroup
§     collect activities for the folio
 
Costs: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme plus an additional cost for ingredients and materials.
 
Career Pathways: Early Childhood Practices, although not a pre-requisite for tertiary studies, provides students with an insight into the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to follow studies or a career in child care services. In the area of Early Childhood Education this includes a career as a Child Care or Kindergarten Assistant, or an Early Childhood, Preschool, Primary or Special Needs Teacher. In the area of Medical Services careers may include Sociologist, Child Health Assistant, Child Psychologist, Social Worker, Paediatric Assistant, Nurse, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist.
