English
Content
The Senior English course is organised around four (4) key concepts in terms of how language constructs our world
· Identities
· Realities
· Interrogating texts
· Satire
In each unit, you will study texts such as films, documentaries, poetry, novels, plays, news and magazine articles, biographies and autobiographies. You will learn to research topics, act out a part and ensure you aren’t unwittingly seduced by the media. You will come to appreciate how writers construct texts for a purpose and how those texts can affect those around them. You will learn to appreciate the power and the beauty of words.
Assessment: You will undertake at least seven (7) assessment items each year. At least two (2) to three (3) will be spoken and at least four (4) to five (5) will be written. Year 11 is essentially developmental and builds the skills for success in Year 12. Therefore, we cover similar assessment types in each year, giving you the best chance of success in Year 12.
Career Pathways: Strong skills in English will help in all senior courses. A Sound Achievement in English is preferred for entry to most university courses. If you particularly enjoy English, you may want to head for a career in some of the following: Advertising, Archaeology, Editing, Journalism, Law, Libraries, Media Production Research, Political Science, Public Services, Publishing, Sociology, Teaching, Translation, Writing.
Costs: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme plus cost of occasional excursions.
English Communication
English Communication is offered as an alternative to Senior English. It has been developed for students who plan to enter TAFE or paid employment on completion of Year 12.
Main purposes of the course
Assessment: Students will be assessed through a variety of in-class tasks. Workplace communication is a focus.
Future Options: English Communication is designed to prepare students for entry into the workforce or for further study at a college of TAFE. It is not a Queensland Studies Authority Subject and does not meet the entry requirements of most university courses and some TAFE courses. It will not contribute to an OP score. Students must consult with the English Department and/or Guidance Officer before enrolling.
Costs: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme.
