Home Economics

The essential focus of Home Economics is the well-being of individuals and families. Through a variety of learning experiences you will develop skills that will equip you for the challenges that will confront you in your personal and professional lives:
  • critical thinking and informed decision making
  • effective research and communication skills
  • food and textile production techniques
  • independence, social responsibility and effective interpersonal skills.
Content: The Senior Home Economics course consists of three areas of study.  Core units are supported by learning experiences offered in elective units.

NOTE:  Food studies units require students to bring own ingredients, container for storage and tea-towel.

Assessment: Year 11 is essentially developmental – providing the theoretical and practical foundation for Year 12 studies. Assessment tasks in each semester will include theory tests, research and practical assignments and folio work.

Your student profile compiled over the two-year course will describe your ability to:
  • recall knowledge and demonstrate understanding
  • use critical thinking skills to research issues
  • collect, interpret and evaluate data to communicate a supportive argument
  • demonstrate practical skills to produce quality products

Cost: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme plus individual student levy to cover additional costs.

Career Pathways: Home Economics, although not a pre-requisite for tertiary studies, provides a valuable foundation and develops your confidence for study or work in the food and textile industries, as well as positions in Teaching, Public Relations and Social Services (Eg Nursing, Psychology, and Social Work).
