Home Economics

Content: In Food Studies, you will gain knowledge and develop skills in the areas of food preparation and nutrition education. Activities will cover important issues regarding food safety and hygiene, basic cookery skills, the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and, adolescent food needs and diets. In elective units you may cover topics including:
  • Food and Socialising – planning functions from menus to invitations and table settings
  • Food and other Cultures – comparing food habits from around the world
  • Food and Technology – examining the food industry, new foods and new cookery methods
  • Food for Fitness – planning diets for the sportsperson
  • Foods for a Fit Future – eating for better long-term health
In Textile Studies, you will learn to use the sewing machine and overlocker and  to produce articles and clothing. Can’t sew? Don’t worry! Activities will focus on mastering the sewing machine and overlocker, avoiding the pitfalls in the fashion retailing and basic garment construction. In elective units you will cover topics including:   
  • Textile Art – creating craft clothing using a variety of textiles and sewing techniques 
  • Fashion Re-worked – recycling and renovating garments to create a new look
  • Fashion For The Sun – creating sun-smart clothing
Assessment: In each unit, assessment tasks will include class tests, research assignments and practical assignments. Your overall result will reflect your ability to use knowledge in written and practical activities, your organisational skills and, your accurate and efficient performance of practical skills.
 
Costs: Covered by Resource Hire Scheme plus an additional cost of $5.00 for materials
