Aerospace Systems

Aerospace Systems aims to raise students’ awareness of the aviation and aerospace industries, encourage students’ future participation in the aerospace industry and increase the skills and knowledge that will enhance students’ future employment prospects. It aims to foster and develop inquiring minds and intellectual skills that will help students think critically and purposefully about the aviation and aerospace environments as well as promote students’ appreciation of the need to become lifelong learners.

There are four mandatory areas of study:

  • Aeronautics and Astronautics
  • Safety Management Systems
  • The Business of Aviation and Aerospace
  • Aviation Operations
Within these areas of study, major topics will include basic aeronautical knowledge, aircraft systems, safety awareness, quality concepts, management principles, human resources management, airport and airline operations and air traffic management. Supporting topics will include meteorology and the history of aviation.

Study of the subject will be accomplished through a thematic approach. The four themes are Archerfield (Study of light aircraft), Amberley (Study of military aircraft), Brisbane Airport (Study of commercial aircraft) and Cape Canaveral (study of astronautics).

Aerospace Alumni

“The aerospace curriculum provided me with the skills to become a well-rounded individual who can be successful in a variety of job situations and environments. From the perspective of a young professional, I believe that the excursion opportunities and various assignment techniques also gave me a vision for corporate growth and they provided insights on the aviation culture and opportunities for professional development and advancement. Mr Rolandsen and Ms Breen, as my mentors, offered me with a broader perspective, unbiased opinions and helped me to establish a positive career path by enhancing my leadership, communication and mentoring skills. The aerospace class provided me with detailed insight into the aviation industry and various professional connections. Aerospace Systems provided me with a rare opportunity to represent my School at the Aerospace Industry Education Awards when I received a scholarship sponsored by Boeing Defence Force Australia. “The course content in Aerospace Systems provided me with the basic understanding of concepts which have helped me in my university degree in Aviation. The industry connections I made through work experience and excursions helped me to gain perspective on the various aviation departments and the opportunities available.”

Flight Training

Flight Training is a subject for students who are looking forward to either a career in aviation or flying for pleasure. During Year's 11 and 12, students are able to enrol in Flight Training as an additional non-ATAR subject.

Students go to a flying school at the Archerfield Airport each week during the year. Initially students work towards performing their first solo and must be 15 years of age to do so. Students work towards a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) and then, after successfully completing navigation flights, gain a Private Pilot Licence. Students will be required to pay their chosen flying school each week for their lesson. This is a pay-as-you-go arrangement with the hire rate of an aircraft and instructor plus landing fees, meaning that each flying week costs between $300 and $400.

The theory, comprising Flight Radio Operator's Licence (FROL), Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) and Private Pilot Licence Theory (PPL), is studied during Wednesday A and study at home. Topics include: aircraft familiarisation, aviation terminology, communications, aircraft general knowledge and control, rules and procedures of flight, theory of flight, meteorology and navigation.

Aerospace Gateway to Industry Project

The Aerospace Gateway to Industry Schools project was established to support the growth and development of an effective workforce for the aviation industry sector. This program provides opportunities for young people to undertake structured workplace learning, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, full-time employment and further study through industry-school partnerships and has proven essential in meeting the Queensland Government’s aim of transitioning young people from school to work while completing school and gaining formal qualifications.

he program currently involves a total of 20 Queensland secondary schools (government and non-government), plus two aviation “hub” schools, with 300 students throughout Queensland studying Aerospace. There are more than 30 industry partners and supports including local aerospace entities, training institutions and universities who are creating pathways for students into Queensland’s aerospace industry. Indooroopilly State High School is a proud member of this project.
